In September 1993, Yoshirio Kimbara, Executive Vice President of Toyota R&D Center, established the G21 team with the goal of creating a modern car that is friendly to resources and the environment.

At the end of 1994, the G21 team designed a hybrid power concept car and launched it at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995. The car was named “Prius”. At the end of 1996, this hybrid concept car began its drive test process.

First Generation of Toyota Prius(1997-2003)

In December 1997, the first-generation Toyota Prius, code-named NHW10, rolled off the assembly line at the Toyota Plant in Aichi Prefecture. The first generation of Toyota Prius is a saloon car.

The first-generation Prius became the world’s first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle.

2001-2003(NHW11)

Prius was initially only sold in Japan, but this car was used as a second-hand car in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and other countries. Toyota finally promoted the first-generation Prius to the North American and European markets in 2000.

In order to meet the requirements of American consumers for high-speed and long-distance driving, NHW11 has upgraded the engine and motor on the basis of NHW10, and air conditioning has also become standard.

The second-generation Prius is 6 inches longer than the first-generation. Its aerodynamic body reduces the length and wind resistance, and the drag coefficient is only 0.26cd. In order to increase power output, Toyota equipped the second-generation Prius with an all-electric air-conditioning compressor, in addition to an electric power steering system. The battery life issue that Toyota was worried about before has been optimized again. The second-generation Prius is equipped with a smaller size and lighter weight nickel-metal hydride battery pack. Toyota provides this battery pack with a warranty period of 100,000 miles (about 161,000 kilometers) or 8 years in the North American market. This further reduces consumers’ doubts about the hybrid technology of oil and electricity.

Toyota posted a “HYBRID SYNERGY DRIVE” logo on the rear of the second-generation Prius.

Third Generation of Toyota Prius(2010-2015)

2009-2015(ZVW30)

Toyota introduced the new Prius at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, which is the third generation Prius.

The third-generation Prius follows the styling design of the previous generation, with only a few details modified. The previous-generation rear spoiler with the same color as the body is changed to a bright black paint, and the black rear spoiler is integrated with the rear window.

The third-generation Prius uses an electronic water pump, which makes it the first mass-produced model that does not require a belt drive. The newly designed inverter, electric motor and other hybrid components are also smaller in size and weight. The first-generation model is 20% lighter. Because of these changes, the fuel economy of this generation Prius has been greatly improved.

Soon after the third-generation Prius was launched, Toyota built the Prius Plug-In Hybrid concept car based on the third-generation Prius and exhibited it at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the same year. This is a plug-in hybrid model. Toyota introduced the Prius PHV plug-in hybrid model code-named ZVW35 to the market in 2011. The car’s fuel consumption per 100 kilometers was further reduced to 2.2 liters and CO2 emissions were reduced to 49 grams/ kilometer.
